Typha Latifolia

The Nature of Structures seminar allowed participants to examine the structure of the specimen more commonly known as the Cattail Reed. Research based on discovering what makes the leave function in such a specific way resulted in a series of models and investigations that explored the structural conditions present in the reed. Specifically, the twisting nature of the leaf reduces its tendency to buckle during sustained winds.  The following models depict the process of precedent, abstraction, element, and alteration, and aim to rethink this twisting nature in a new and dynamic manner.
